According to this article at Wired.com, most Americans don't believe the government should be pushing broadband on the citizens, but look who is in favor of it:

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/08/broadband-should-not-be-a-government-priority-pew-internet-study/

"But the really surprising finding was that 53% of the 2,252 American adults polled by telephone (744 interviewed on cell phones) said the spread of affordable broadband should not be a major government priority. Only 41% said it should be. People under 30 and African-Americans were most likely to be in favor, but the 21% who said they were currently not online were “especially resistant to government involvement in broadband promotion,” according to the researchers."

So, maybe HUD didn't think their Section 8 demographic would have Internet access (ever heard of a public library), or, more likely, they were swamped with more applicants than could logically have been expected. They had people out there from New York, Michigan, Tennessee, etc...trying to get on the waiting list.

A common thread I've noticed among most of the people interviewed by local and national media on this story is: single mother, 5-7 children each, and apparently no husband in the picture.

I can tell you where the next digital battle is going to be: Kindles. Watch as suburban, more affluent school districts, in order to save costs, start buying Kindles and E-books for their students and requiring school book companies to make their books and articles available for download. We'll start to get sob stories from the media about how inner-city, disadvantaged youth are being forced to carry 30lbs of heavy books to and from school everyday while suburban kids are carrying around a 3lb Kindle or laptop to download all their homework.Art Vandelayhttp://vandelayindustries.co.zwnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3890530692790573387.post-53282890786066873522010-08-12T08:48:59.483-07:002010-08-12T08:48:59.483-07:00This story is far worse than you are even presenti...This story is far worse than you are even presenting.

From the same Atlanta paper you linked too earlier today:

"Lemish said 13,000 applications were distributed Wednesday and that everyone who showed up before the 1 p.m. deadline received one.

Applicants came from all over the metro area and some came from other states. Since the program is a federal program, applications are not limited to East Point residents, Lemish said.

The current process is being conducted because, while all housing units are filled, the waiting list is depleted and the current group of applicants will be put on a new waiting list. There are a total of 655 housing spots available -- 200 public housing units and 455 vouchers for rent assistance in private housing. East Point currently has five housing developments, but three of them will be closed or sold.

Lemish said it will likely be six months before any vacancies arise and that people could spend up to 10 years on the waiting list."

http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/east-point-begins-taking-589653.html

So 30,000 Black people show up to battle it out for the chance at one of 655 housing vacancies?

30,000! 30,000 people for the off-beat chance of their application being approved so that they can reside in one of 655 vacancies.

I started reading this site about 5 months ago. Some waited in line for two days for the applications.

Offering applications for the first time since 2002, East Point Housing Authority officials had triple the crowd they anticipated, and one that was three-fourths of the 40,000 population of the south Fulton city. Things got out of hand when people started cutting into lines and authorities attempted to move groups to different areas."

http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/housing-crisis-reaches-full-590299.html

Here are more photos:

http://projects.ajc.com/gallery/view/metro/atlanta/east-point-vouchers/

Ladies and gents,

The United States is bankrupt. Needs to blacks are cell phones, hair-dos, expensive sneakers, X-Box, rims, single serving food items, weed, energy drinks and flashy clothing. They will not pay their "light bill" in order to pay for $100 baby sneakers and hair weaves. Once blacks find out that needs are actually food, shelter and water, they will not be prepared. As long as the government keeps paying for their needs, they have lots of extra money for wants. Blacks live a frivolous life, and are not prepared for survival, and will only be able to last for a few hours if the grid fails or the entitlements end. SBPDL, I've posted in the comment section about how this recession is actually a good step in the right direction towards dismantling the entitlement and welfare programs, and I'm happy to see an entire entry on the topic.

I don't think that the cutting of welfare will provide a lesson to the black folks about self reliance, not a chance. However, at the same time I don't think that we will see mass starvation and famine seen in poor African nations. I expect the black folks to survive as they have been without a substantial aggregate change to their living standard. However, I expect the recession to illuminate to both whites and the productive minority groups, one of which I am a part of, that welfare is a highly corrupt and wasteful system.

I would gladly donate canned food items and non perishables to any family in need if the case warrants it.
