How Did the University of Chicago Survive the Black Undertow in the South Side of Chicago? By Taking Tom Buchanan's Advice...

How did the University of Chicago survive the Manifest Destruction of black migrants to the south side of Chicago?

Only through the creation of a private security force – some say the second largest private police in the world to only that of the one found in Vatican City to guard the Papacy – was the U of Chicago able to keep the school in the south side of the city.
Yeah, Tom Buchanan was right about the 'rising tide of color' stuff

Well, that and some nifty zoning planes to ensure the rising tide of color (black migrants from the south) didn’t overwhelm the area and drive away a white middle-class with the crime they imported to the city [A brief history of the UCPD: "There are no firm records, it may surprise you, on the history of the Department.", Chicago Maroon, 5-25-12]:
A greater culture of safety and protection can be traced to the University’s role in urban renewal in Hyde Park and Kenwood and the creation of the South East Chicago Commission (SECC) in 1952. The 1950s saw a greater concern in safety in the area, as neighborhood residents grew increasingly concerned with the state of dilapidated buildings and unsavory businesses. “In February of ‘52, there was a faculty wife assaulted and robbed on the Midway,” said Mason, who also served as the executive director of the SECC from 1982 to 2009. “That seemed to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Numerous faculty members and senior staff members went in to see the Chancellor…and de- manded that something be done. Either move the University out of this horrible area or do something to clean [it] up.”

The institution of force was the primary mechanism to save the university; this same mechanism was instituted in Detroit (Stop the Robberies, Enjoy Safe Streets – STRESS), but it failed because the city had already been abandoned by too many of the people whose blood had helped build it.

White people.

White flight.

Robert Beauregard’s Voices of Decline: The Postwar Fate of US Cities includes a powerful quote about why cities shouldn’t be abandoned. William Zeckendorf, president of the real estate firm of Webb & Knapp believed “too much had been invested in the cities to abandon them.”
Lecturing in 1951 at the Harvard School Design, he said: “How can we keep cities that represent the toil and sweat and invested labor and capital of generations from becoming ghost towns.”
He would close his talk by saying, “I don’t believe that cities are lost unless we are prepared to abandon them.” (p. 118)

Detroit was lost, because the people whose ancestors had toiled, sweated and invested their labor - and the capital of generations - to build, abandoned it.

But back to the University of Chicago.

In Jon C. Teaford’s “The Rough Road to Renaissance: Urban Revitalization in America, 1940-1985,” we learn the demise of the south side of Chicago predated the institution of Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” – meaning the blame for the dysfunction blacks brought to Chicago can’t be placed upon social/welfare programs.

In a short period of time, Teaford makes clear the leaders of the U of Chicago would have to enact decisions to save their university from the coming of the Black Undertow:
At first the area’s dominant institution, the University of Chicago, refused to cooperate with the conference, but by 1952 worsening neighborhood conditions were causing a loss of faculty and students, thus requiring the university to intervene. A community activist reported that the trustees and administrators were “forced to admit that if they didn’t engage in community action, they might end up with a $200,000,000 investment in a slum, without anybody to do research or any students to educate.” Responding to the problem, the university was instrumental in organizing and funding the South East Chicago Commission headed by the university’s president. The commission stepped up pressure on the city to halt illegal conversions [illegal conversions of single-family dwellings into apartments and the threat of white flight as blacks moved into the area was the catalyst for the creation of the Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference], and the university’s private police force patrolled Hyde Park, supplementing the inadequate municipal protection. (p. 118)

From “The Metropolitan Revolution: The Rise of Post-Urban America” we get an even clearer picture of how the University of Chicago was saved from the very threat F. Scott Fitzgerald’s supercilious character, Tom Buchanan from “The Great Gatsby,” warned about when he quoted ‘Goddard’:
Meanwhile, the University of Chicago was embarking on an even more ambitious program dedicated to saving its neighborhood for the middle class. Located in the Hyde Park district of Chicago’s South Side adjacent to Bronzeville, the university was in the path of the expanding African American community; by the late 1940s, an invasion of poor blacks seemed imminent. Responding to this threat, in 1952 the university established the South East Chicago Commission, which drafted a plan for spot clearance of the area’s most blighted structures and rehabilitation or conservation of the remaining buildings. The idea was to eliminate dilapidated housing with rents affordable to low-income blacks and upgrade or preserve the remaining dwelling units for middle-class occupants.
In 1955 demolition began, and the following year the commission secured approval for $26 million in federal urban renewal funds. The neighborhood was not to be lily-white; middle-class blacks were not to be excluded. But Hyde Park was to remain a bastion against lower-class invaders. One comedian joked: “This is Hyde Park, whites and blacks shoulder to shoulder against the lower class.”

The measures to keep the University of Chicago safe from the black underclass – only attracted to Chicago, as they were Detroit, for the economic opportunities white people created – predate the introduction of the “Great Society” of the 1960s by a decade.

But that doesn’t compute.

Weren’t black people on the verge of becoming the model minority in America before then? Then why did the University of Chicago have to take such drastic steps to remain in the south side of Chicago as the entire community went black?

What seems like a throw-away line in Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” has lasting permanence when you consider the culture blacks brought to the south side of Chicago that the University of Chicago effectively fought against:
“The idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be – will be utterly submerged. It’s all scientific stuff; it’s been proved.” “We’ve got to beat them down,” whispered Daisy, winking ferociously toward the fervent sun.

The Vatican has the largest private police in the world, with the task of protecting the Pope, Vatican City, and the Cardinals of the Catholic Church; the second largest private police force in the world, found in the south side of Chicago, is still tasked with protecting the students, administrators, and faculty from… the rising tide of color that gave it its birth.

All of which was prior to the institution of the Great Society…

Tom Buchanan was right, and the University of Chicago took his advice in fortifying the school from the rising tide of color that utterly submerged most of the south side of Chicago in a cocoon of violence, misery, and vice.

All of which was prior to the institution of the Great Society…

This timely article makes me stop to think about how many of America's top colleges and universities now find themselves as oases of culture and learning in the middle of desolate black criminality: Yale, University of Southern California, University of Pennsylvania, Rhodes College, Columbia, and the list goes on...

And to think, in 1977 I almost went to the University of Chicago. I did go for an interview, but at the last minute I picked Houston.

I guess that is why I live to tell about it......

Watching these people come up with excuses for blacks is like watching someone bash their head against a wall. Over and over and over. You want them to stop - or at least to give them some kind of helmet - but you feel the only way they'll learn is the hard way.

Walls are pretty hard.

many non-elite universities are surrounded by ghetto. in my city in kansas $ gets funneled into the few blocks surrounding the university - making it all brightly lit with a new police station, & well-lit drive thru businesses - gas stations, banks, car washes, mcdonalds, etc. as long as you stay within a block of campus you can pretend not to see the undertow.

The capitol city of any state often has the highest property values, lowest unemployment and the strongest fiscal position. Except Harrisburg PA which has been run by negroes. You have to be pretty incompetent and or corrupt to screw up the finances of a capitol city. But the negro is up to the task.

Between my junior and senior years of college, I and 4 or my fraternity brothers were selected to attend the national east coast convention being held at the U of PA in Philadelphia. We were housed in one of the high rise dorms right on campus. In the orientation package, it was spelled out pretty clearly that one was safe while remaining on campus but all bets were off when leaving the campus grounds. If you "had" to do this, make sure there were at least 4 in the group. The area immediately surrounding the campus was considered to dangerous, lethal territory. Needless to say, no mention of race in the brochure. Our school was/is a small liberal arts, private college in rural Md. Such precautions there were unheard of and unnecessary. This was in '73. Today's problems in Chicago are nothing new and no surprise. It's just getting some well deserved attention after all these years. Whites are beginning to wake up to the dangers of diversity and integration. Begs the question, what took so long?

Sacramento is pretty bad. Having a whole lot of people from Mexico, this just in ... is not wealth producing.

Don't forget Tulane University, located in "nice" Audobon Park: Ellen Degeneres, the Mannings, John Goodman, Harry Connick Jr, all live there. VERY nice. Total ghetto in a scary way (the way say, Watts and Compton are not). I've been to both, I'd take Watts and Compton in a heartbeat over New Orleans Midcity and anything CLOSE to Rampart in the Quarter. Tourists are kept out of St. Louis Cemeteray #1, at night, because the Projects overlooking them have guys with binoculars looking and calling on cell phones to thugs with guns to rob and worse. Tours go in with ... armed guards. Nope, not kidding.

South Central IS dangerous, my USC visit I came upon the aftermath of a shooting with cones and paint on the shell casings, car doors open and bloody, clean up time. But its nothing like New Orleans. Nothing.

I've been to University of Chicago too. Nice area, you forget you're in South Side Chicago. But Northwestern is like every John Hughes movie come to life. There were LOTS of cops and security around UC; none at all and very safe in Northwestern.

Current situation may be described as a host (white America) infected with a slow acting, but potentially fatal infection. (groids)

Symbionic species also present. (Asians)

Less lethal infections also present, more of a nuisance than an existential threat. (Hispanics)

Eventually the hosts's immune system recognizes the threat (TNB) and activates the response. (Reduction in total groid potential)

The problem with the Negro and LBJs Great Society programs was not the black inability to function prosperously in the white man's culture of civilization but rather that the Negro would now vote democrat in high %s "For the next 100 years", LBJ.

The LBJ programs bought black constituency for the democrat party with money from the white collective, including non-liberal whites. Liberalism is immaturity, therefore liberals cheat.

If liberals wanted to buy the Negro constituency with the maturity of "fair play", they would buy it with their own money, and their own money only.

However, as said, that is not how liberals, "All for me, none for you, and totally at your expense", play ball.

Under our current condition, where liberal ideology rules as the defacto law of the land, we, our white race and gene, and obviously our Founding Father's free enterprise Republic are doomed Thanks

There's some pretty heavy indoctrination that has gone on, from birth for some people, to prevent them from even considering that it could be "blacks qua blacks" that are the problem. This happened to me. My parents were "strong anti-racists", hippie Jesus Freaks, and I became a more agnostic anti-racist - it didn't occur to me to question the "anti-racist" dogma. Even as I reached the end of my 30s I couldn't see what was under my nose.

My wake up call came after an incident last year in which, luckily, I wasn't hurt. I was waiting for the bus and these little black kids were pretty obviously watching me and whispering about me. I heard "*whisper whisper white lady *whisper whisper*" I figured they were just being rude, hadn't been raised right. They were maybe around 11, 3-4 of them. The bus came and I sat away from them. They started edging further up the bus, which made me a little nervous. I couldn't figure out what they were up to. Then as I was getting ready to get off I heard them say to each other they were getting off at the next stop, which made me relax a little.

But they followed me, split up and followed me, surrounding me like a pack of wolves, all so they could steal like, $20 from my purse. I could see them following me and I even couldn't figure out why, They just came in from all sides. So I looked at one and the other dove in, then they all ran off. I might have been more wary from the outset but I never expected little kids to rob me, and these were little kids, pre-pubescent. The whole thing weirded me out more than frightened me.

The police officer I spoke to at length - also black - had no bones about telling me the score. He said their mothers send them out to do this because they are too young to be held. They get released to their mothers - who are in their 20s, usually, and giggle when they take them up. Then they pick them up for the same thing the next day until they are teenagers and move on to real crime.

A few months later there was a "senseless" gang rape of a white woman who went out to her car and was grabbed, beaten bloody and raped for an hour by three teenage white thugs, then shoved out of the car. I was discussing this with an older white lady at my school, and I brought up the pickpocketing incident, knowing it was somehow connected. She leaned over and said to me very intently, "Listen - THEY HATE US."

And I finally got it.

Black people HATE us. They hate that we're prettier, that we're smarter. They hate that we do things better. This feels like a dangerous thought to have, and I know if I say it to most of my friends they will freak out on me, but I put it together with a lot of incidents in my life and it's the only thing that makes them make sense. Different black people deal with that hate and envy differently, but it's there in all of them.

But no one ever told me this until a few months ago. It's probably one of the most taboo topics I've ever encountered in my life.

My daughter goes to Loyola Baltimore - all the universities there have their own police forces, there is a dedicated bus for the students, and city police turn over arrested students to university police so they won't be killed or raped in city jails. Baltimore from the train station to Johns Hopkins was like a ghost town when I visited my brother there.

Trenton NJ doesn't even host the governor's mansion - that's in Princeton. Still, Trenton does not have the dangerous vibe of Philly, Newark, Baltimore.

The Board did consider moving the entire operation to Palo Alto and merging with Stanford, but, apparently, they found that they were too legally entangled with the city to leave. In addition to the police force and blatant housing discrimination, they created a no-man's land between the campus and the Woodlawn neighborhood to the south. There was an entire block of vacant land south of a strip of buildings along 60th Street.

I've been reading the articles and comments on SBPDL for quite some time now and have received quite an education. So much so that I feel I have acheived an undergraduate sociology degree in Niggerology.
While that knowledge and understanding is a blessing, it's also horrifying to realize just how destructive, parasitical and worthless the black community is and how evil their enablers are.
I have a dream that one day the entire nation will wake up to the reality of black dysfunction and destructiveness and deal with them and their enablers accordingly. On that day, the excuses stop and a deaf ear is turned to all the niggerwhine. The race card no longer works and the "blame whitey for ever'thang" game comes to a screeching halt. No more subsidizing negro dysfunction and no more feeding and breeding of destructive parasites.
That would truly be a new "Age of Reason" based on race realism.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to say to negroes, "This is what you do, how you are and we don't want or need you and won't put up with all your shit! Leave or else!"
Wait a minute......we had that at one time. It was called segregation.

1. Rockefeller Foundation Commits $100 Million to Boost Youth Employment in Africa

The Rockefeller Foundation has announced the creation of a $100 million youth employment initiative for Africa.

Announced at a recent World Economic Forum meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, the Digital Jobs Africa initiative aims to capitalize on the youth bulge in Africa, which boasts the world's youngest population and where 60 percent of young people are unemployed, and the rapid expansion of the continent's information communication technology (ICT) sector to connect one million young people in six countries — South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, and Egypt — to job training and employment opportunities.

To help address the unemployement problem on the continent, Digital Jobs Africa will focus on three specific interventions: leveraging rising demand from multinationals and African companies and governments to create so-called digital jobs in areas such as data entry, service center support, online research, and Web design; working with local organizations to provide ICT skills training to young people; and coordinating among government and businesses to create a supportive and sustainable environment for digital job creation

The worm is turning. Slowly.

In 1968 liberalism peaked. The first sign that the electorate was beginning to realize that their wishful thinking about blacks might be wrong was in the nineties when every state started to incarcerate black offenders for longer terms. Suddenly there was a consensus to scrap all those prevention theories and focus on punishment.

In spite of an all out attempt by liberal academia define race as only a 'social construct' the public is beginning to notice that its unsafe to walk around on the streets of cities with a large black populations.

I predict that we will do just what others around the world have done - put up walls and man those walls with armed guards. Gated communities and private police are common in South Africa and they have a black national government.

I might move to Detroit if there was a good enough fence. Actually I'm joking. I like the climate here. It would take a city wide dome to tempt me to move there.

But hardier folks - white folks - would colonize Detroit if only there was a good enough barricade. But in America if there was an attractive community behind that wall there would be pressure to give everyone equal access.

So attempts to re-colonize Detroit must wait until racial attitudes have changed. We spent so many years being indoctrinated into the belief that a 'white only' drinking fountains was an offense against man and God, that it will be some time before we are willing to accept white only urban districts.

But even so I think that that will come. There is reason to be hopeful. Murder by street blacks - by far the most common type of murder - is inherently easy to solve and control. Serial murderers on the other hand are very, very difficult to uncover.

Blacks can only shoot up the ghettos because we have to date been reluctant to institute common sense race relevant laws.

The Second Amendment was largely fashioned by Southerners to protect militias whose main purpose was to guard against slave revolts. They feared that someone like Nat Turner would arise - and they were right.

The Founding Fathers would have been astonished that blacks were allowed to bear arms. If whites and Asians are allowed to have guns and blacks aren't, the murder rate in US cities would drop like a stone. I don't think anyone doubts that, but such a law is now considered impossible. But attitudes can change.

We will have more and more gated communities - whites fencing themselves in. Then we will reverse it and start fencing in blacks.

We already do something like this with the city of El Paso/Juarez. The white half of the city is on one side of the fence and the minority half is on the other. The white half was "The Safest City in America" in 2012. Juarez was the "Murder Capitol of the World" for most of the last decade. All this is made possible with just a well manned fence.

I think in the long run we must institute a mandatory national achievement test for all 18 year olds. This would kick off an economic revolution as employers would be able to better get the people they need and trillions of dollars would cease to be spent on college classes for reluctant non-scholars. That reform too would require some attitude change.

It says something that major centers of education and research in America are little islands of civilization in the midst of a killing zone. And that they need private armies (campus police) to hold back the tide of barbarism. Right out of post-apocalyptic science fiction, so to speak.

Of course, we might ask how much of the civilizational collapse which surrounds universities are the direct result of the DWL policies promoted by those same institutes of higher agitprop. Even when the apocalypse is just outside the campus gates, DWLs remain blinded to the havoc they have wrecked on the Western world.

The situation is similar to what we see in post-colonial Africa. Once great cities become urban wastelands with gang-warlord violence, infrastructure collapse and Big Men looting the treasury. (Though at least in Africa, black vigilantes might get out the pangas and cut up a malefactor on occasion, give 'em credit for that!)

Africa and America (and now Europa) are seeing this collapse after half a century of DWL social engineering: de-segregation, de-colonialization, war on poverty, one-man-one-vote, positive role models on the telescreen, open borders, kum-bay-a.

You'd think that the abysmal failure of DWL policies would give conservatives a lever to smash liberalism. If there ever was a political movement that has failed on all fronts, it is modern liberalism.

Yet right at the moment when liberalism has demonstrated epic failure, conservatives are busy caving on all fronts. To attack liberalism, they'd have to attack its underlying egalitarian premises. And this conservatives will not do today. Once again, defeat has been snatched from the jaws of victory.

Remarkable.

I have friends who tell me they believe that if they treat black people nicely, blacks will be nice to them in return. This is not an ignoble feeling, and certainly within the bounds of decency, but it has implications in the real world. Look at Amy Biehl.

Robert Heinlein once commented that the masses of the third world hate us because they see the Western world as rich and blame their own poverty on us. Regardless of the rationales we might have for our own wealth, it's difficult to argue with someone who is hungry for what we have. So war is gonna be inevitable. Heinlein was of the Keep Your Powder Dry school, by the way.

Anon mentioned her parents were "hippie Jesus Freaks." Something I've seen among the hippie generation is the belief that "love will conquer all." This can work when you have the proverbial "rough men who guard you while you sleep," but proves to be a disaster in the real world. Again, look at Amy Biehl or any number of DWLs who have been cut to pieces by blacks on any number of continents. "Being nice" won't survive the first panga blow.

DWLs operate in an Orwellian inversion of reality. They claim that race realists "hate" blacks. But it is blacks who collectively hate whites. Moreover, it is DWLs who hate themselves, manifested in their pathological sense of guilt. And this hatred manifests itself in the constant demonization of whites as "racists," in the endless race hustling, in the flash mobs, in the torture-murders on several continents, in the destruction of entire cities.

I was thinking about the Congo in the 1960s. How black rebels attacked white missionaries and white doctors who were there to help them--to be "nice." And all it got those missionaries and doctors was some really grisly tortures and a trip to the grave. It took white mercenaries -- many from apartheid South Africa and Rhodesia, by the way -- to restore a modicum of civilization.

Something to think about in the continuing collapse...

A very popular writer among the hippie DWLs is Starhawk. She wrote a very pretty novel, a dystopia/utopia called "The Fifth Sacred thing". The novel is set in the near future and pits an "evil" empire of militaristic racist Christians against loving environmental liberals who don't have guns but aim to conquer the enemy through just loving them sooo much.
At least, that's the stated claim of the novel, to show the power of love and oeace over militarism and hate. As I'm guessing probably most of you won't wade through it's 1000 words, I don't feel bad about giving away a spoilerish ending that they actually win by converting some of the army from the racist Christians to their own cause. She tries to make that sound like it's the victory of love over hate - but I think subliminally even she realizes victory isn't possible without greater weaponry and tactics.

Starhawk's beautiful hippie paradise isn't possible without meanie, ugly, militarism to protect it.
This is the challenge of all beautiful, free societies.

Californian said...

At least, that's the stated claim of the novel, to show the power of love and peace over militarism and hate.

Well, perhaps Starhawk could show us how it is done. Say, by moving to Congo or a white-run farm in South Africa or Chicago's South Side or a Paris benelieu. Might even be worthwhile for her to post online videos of her confronting flash mobbers, drive-by shooters, ANC minions, and cannibal warlords.

Thing is, the USA has been running its domestic policy according to the principles she appears to espouse for at least half a century. And the results are in: dysfunctional demographics and devastated cities. The endless gang warfare becomes progressively worse each decade, and now we see third world immigrants clashing with American blacks. So much for moving to a new era of peace and common humanity!

We might also ponder the results of de-colonialization in sub-Saharan Africa, another DWL love-will-conquer-all project. Do we see any advance for liberalism in the various Big Man ruled states, or assorted human rights debacles? Nope, but there is no end to those who will follow in the footsteps of an Amy Biehl.

Again, it gets back to the delusional nature of DWL ideology/magical thinking.

It's probably one of the most taboo topics I've ever encountered in my life." - Now here is the next step in this journey: the reason the left does what it does is also motivated by a desire to seek status. though in their case, the fact that we have the temerity to oppose them on anything.

Are there any sources for the statement that the Vatican employs the world's biggest private security force?

I thought they had a regular(public) police force and the Swiss guard(which is technically military) to guard the Pope.

Always look at what the YKW DO--not what they say. The powerful take care of themselves,as in Oak Park,Il,home of Ernest Hemingway. This beautiful suburb on Chicago's western border was ready to go Full Metal Negro, with all the destruction of those Frank Lloyd Wright homes as well as everything else, that negro invasion entails. They were allowed to limit the invasion of the primitives. (Its called "A black a block".) Yes there is the occasional white guy getting his head opened up and the occasional rape. But walking thru Austin (them) into Oak Park the change is profound. Austin being seedy, dirty, menacing, while OP is the opposite. Now the UC is wealthy, powerful and Jewish. You think the blacks are gonna destroy it?This is the university that named a building after the pig Susan Sontag, nee Rosenblatt.

IIT has a McDonalds across from campus that students DO NOT patronize. When Robert Taylor was up it was gunfire all night

Rockefeller Foundation Commits $100 Million to Boost Youth Employment in Africa
The Rockefeller Foundation has announced the creation of a $100 million youth employment initiative for Africa.

This is quite laughable. $100 million down the drain. Africa is never going to become a hotbed for technology support and services.

Starhawk wrote another book that I read on recommendation of my then-GF. Titled "Dreaming the Dark", it was a load of wish-fulfillment nonsense much as it appears that her novel is. I read it cover to cover and was all ready to go into a discussion of it in relation to another philosophical work... except (now ex-)GF would not read the other book to be able to talk about it. If nothing else had killed the relationship, that would have done it.

I recommend reading these books (if you can borrow them; do not waste your money in support of this insanity). It tells you where liberalism is coming from. They are literally magical thinkers.

The Rockefeller Foundation has announced the creation of a $100 million youth employment initiative for Africa... to provide ICT skills training to young people; and ... create a supportive and sustainable environment for digital job creation

Thanks for my laugh of the day. This reminds me of something I've seen... from the 1980's, when South Africans began to lose their appetite for Apartheid, the Computer Society of South Africa has been trying to teach these Babuntus IT skills. But, to their horror, they found that they're unteachable. With the best will in the world, no amount of bridging courses or culturally friendly course design could overcome the basic inability of the African to grasp IT concepts. It can't be done. You can't make a programmer of a Babuntu.

Africa is not experiencing an explosion of ICT, unless you count the growth in cell-phone use. They would do far better to teach them farming skills - although there's little demand for that, since they don't want to work in the first place, and anyway, that's women's work.

These DWLs are really delusional. We had Stephen Hawking in Africa a couple of years back, looking for the black Einstein. Never heard how that went, but I suspect he went home disappointed.

Yes, '60's Congo was pretty grisly.

Look up the Simbs Rebellion or google 'Stanleyville 1964'.
