Black History Month Heroes: Persephone in "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" and Guinevere in BBC's "Merlin"

(Editors note: I know not everyone enjoys Black Fictional Month Heroes, but there is a reason we do them. Also, the publisher of the book will be sending me the link for where to purchase SBPDL: Year One. As soon as it is available on their Web site, it will be available on Amazon.)

Think about why there was an uproar over Thor for one moment. You remember that media firestorm right? We wrote about the movie Thor back in April of 2010 and pointed out the oddity of a Black guy cast as a Norse God.

Months later a Boycott Thor Web site was created that brought media attention to the oddity of white people coming together to voice concern over the portrayal of Norse God as a Black guy. Black people, who complained about the casting of Angelia Jolie as Cleopatra and, well, complain about almost everything else that involves a clash of different races in America and the inevitable metrics showcasing Black failures that such an encounters inevitably produce, should be overjoyed that Idris Elba was cast as Heimdall.
Persephone was Greek, right? So why is she Black in Percy Jackson?

It was a horrible year for Black people at the movies in 2010 and adding a Black guy to the pantheon of Nordic Gods makes perfect sense when you factor in Hollywood's fanatic goal of creating fictional Black heroes (like the ones we profile here) that sadly lack real world counterparts.

That a nation once existed - just watch Turner Classic Movies (TCM) - that didn't apologize for being white strikes one who can see as an ethereal thought when you consider that Black Run America's (BRA) Department of Education mandates the teaching of Black students that every failure of their race is due to white racism and that every evil in the world is courtesy of nefarious white people; that myths once existed that grounded a certain people together creating an immutable bond to the past, present, and future is a thought so extreme that these myths must be purged or sanitized for a more diverse audience.

Hence the need to include Morgan Freeman in 12th century England in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves the portrayal of Friar Tuck as a Black guy in the BBC's recent Robin Hood production. Though England had virtually no Black people 50 years ago (and a non-existent crime rate), the future of the once great United Kingdom must have a past that is palatable to the Black people who now reside there.

That the people behind Thor would dare cast all of the Nordic Gods as - God forbid - white people isn't conducive to the new myths that must bring together the diverse people that now reside in Western Europe and America.

Movies and television represent the shared culture of modern America now, bringing the intellectual proclivities and progressive mindset of New York City and Los Angeles to areas of the country that consider both places synonymous with Sodom and Gomorrah. These areas imbibe this culture nevertheless, just as the British people joyfully drink from the culture cup that the BBC in London provides them.

Few people even complained that the recent BBC adaptation of Merlin cast a Black girl as Guinevere. Angel Coulby is that Black girl and though England was home to an all-white population when the Arthurian legend was purported to have transpired, rare is the eye that publicly bashes at such inaccurate castings.
Wait... Guinevere is Black? Weren't all the ancient Britons white?

The Arthur legend of his Knights of the Round Table is too grotesquely white for Cool Britannia, just as those disgusting Greek myths of Zeus had one too many white people as Gods.  In Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, the Goddess of Spring Persephone was played by Rosario Dawson. Dawson doesn't look Greek, but she does have the approved racial look of the future that Quincy Jones' daughter states is the future of America.

These myths have the misfortune of being created by a distinct people, a homogeneous people. That Black people were absent during the original telling of these myths is an unfortunate fact rectified by those pushing an agenda of affirmative black-tion.

Joseph Campbell, the author of Hero of a Thousand Faces, studied mythology his entire life and was curiously quiet about the myths that are indigenous to Africa. In a way, one can look at the novel of Alex Haley and the subsequent production of Roots as a creation of new myths.

Movies represent an avenue where new myths conducive to the ruling ideology espoused by BRA can be easily disseminated to an unsuspecting public. This is why Black Fictional Heroes play such an important part in creating that myth and ensuring that it endures.

Fealty to Black people is the new American way. Those who transgress from this mindset are straying from the intense devotion to the mythology of white guilt that creates this desire to placate Black people at every turn.

Even the Tim Burton remake of Willy Wonka was attacked for lacking Black characters. The myths of old are restrictive to a certain people; the myths in BRA must be inclusive to everyone.

Persephone (clip from movie here) and Guinevere, two iconic characters from white mythology have been freed and in a recent movie and TV show cast as Black women. That any white person dare raise their voice over these castings is a sign of revolt; that thousands of voices said "what the Thor?" to the casting of Heimdall as a Black guy is a sign that something is rotten in BRA.

Black Fictional Heroes include the Persephone and Guinevere, as cast in Percy Jackson and Merlin respectively. Don't Black people have a myth or two that they wrote down (wait, Black people in Africa rarely recorded their myths for posterity) that could be the basis for a movie?

No? Why is that? What are the great Black myths (besides these inventions)?

I have to give it to you: this is pretty ridiculous. Black people (or Latino-mulattos like Rosario Dawson) did not exist in these areas during these times, although I have often wondered why Othello is always black (I didn't know Moorish was black).

But what you fail to understand is that these are not production companies kowtowing to minorities; these are white people who crave to see us in their films. Ultimately, whites are the largest group of consumers with the most buying power. A film with too many blacks (Princess and the frog) is no dice, but a black or two is just right.

I remarked before that black people do not care about being in a white movie; we will see it anyway because the history of American blacks is of seeing whites in everything. We will go with the flow. (By the way, Asians frequently bitch-and-moan about lack of representation in film. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118012538?refcatid=3845)

But, since whites love stereotypes and tokens, a black is bound to turn up in film for comic relief, or like the film doppelganger of good ol' Mammy. It's like fuzzy slippers for you people. (Paul Mooney relates this beautifully in 'Know Your History'.)

By the way, interesting read with the 'Thor' link. They say:
Marvel Studios depicts the Einherjer as a being white, black, and Asian. This implies that Northern Europe was not only chock full of Asians and blacks, but that blacks and Asian were performing heroic deeds in Northern Europe. Two actors are listed as “Einherjer” in the movies’ credits. One is black and one is Korean.
To depict these men as slain Viking heroes is tantamount to slander against generations of our ancestors.

I don't think this is really on the same level as having fair-skinned Liz Taylor, Angelina Jolie, or Vivien Leigh playing Egpytians, as well all know (and you know it, too) that these people looked like Ethiopians and black Americans. This is a systematic destruction of black history.

But how many whites are really even familiar with Norse mythology?

But cheer up, girl; there's a film adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood with a beautiful blond as Red and there's not a nigga in sight!

Harold W. said...

For many black people, there's nothing wrong with a little color until it doesn't benefit them. Sure it's all good to have black Greek and Norse gods. However, as soon as there's a white Cleopatra or white hip hop dancer (like Honey or Step Up), you better believe the word "racist" is tossed quicker than a crackhead sneaking into a 5-star restaurant. (Or even better, you can set your watch to Desiree popping up to comment on said issue.)

It's interesting that black people have to be inserted into white mythological characters who have nothing to do with the black experience. Where's John Henry? Ananzi the Spider? High John the Conqueror? For a race who constantly is proclaimed as "creative" and has a very high spending power, where is the incentive to create their own films with faces like them with an experience that they can relate to?

No one knows the black experience like black people, this much is true. For all the black actors and actresses without jobs, why not assemble the best and brightest talents and create more films highlighting African mythology? It worked in "Da Wiz".

"But how many whites are really even familiar with Norse mythology"

More than you think. Believe it or not, most whites know history (real WRITTEN history, not the kind garbled by the voice of generations) and who their ancestors were. It's fun to find out your related to royalty, presidents, great artists, inventors, and such.

I can see why ancestry really doesn't interest African-Americans as there was never any written language in the parts of Africa where they were sold by neighboring tribes. Kind of hard to find ancestors when nothing was written down. Plus it's not as fun when you know your greatest ancestor would be a tribal leader in loin cloth.

* After reading what I just typed I came to realize that this is a great example why this "living in the moment" mentality may be genetic.

John Boorman's "Excalibur" back in the 80s was the last good Arthurian movie that was made. Twelfth Knight was only so-so.

Alex Haley was a such a fraud, but he got his comeuppance. After he plagiarized the material for Roots, he was sued by the original (white) author for an undisclosed sum between six and seven figures, and he paid to keep it quiet. Even Cornell West is on the record as saying "Roots," is bullshit. Also, the idea that one could correctly trace their ancestors back to the Ivory Coast is laughable.

Diarrhea, you are a victimologist to the core. Blacks add no value to anything, and whites really don't care about them. Once more whites like us start realizing that the blacks ARE the third world and therefore a threat to our society, the white guilt will end, we can all finally live a pristine white life without all the hassle of pulling blacks out of the ghetto.

When I watch a move and it has more than 1 or 2 blacks in it, I stop watching after I have a little chuckle about the absurdity of it all. We know the deal already.

The movie makers, portray black people the type of "visually acceptable" black people should look like to white Hollywood.

Hollywood also role plays, "gentle soft pretty black women" very different than the average black most Americans recognize in the "Beat whitie news crew at the iHop movie"

Hollywood blacks have been "Anglo-ized", and thankfully so. They come out "prettier"..

Even Desiree has stated her goal to marry a white guy, she too is joining the "let's make black people prettier by softening their features and modifying the afression genes".

Good work Desiree, we thank you and your future contribution to making one drop babies.

Black mentality: Egypt is in Africa. Blacks came from Africa. So Egyptians must be black.

Try going to Egypt sometime. Ever wonder why the ancient Egyptians called the people past upper Egypt the nubians or dark people? (Note: Southern Egypt was called upper Egypt because the Nile flow south to north) The blacks in Egypt were the slave class, many made to be eunochs. They were not any of the Pharoahs or general population.

Granted the ancient Egyptians were not white, but neither were they black Africans. Just more liberal crap that blacks eat up like a Popeye's fried chicken special.

@Desiree i notice in the last post that you have written that Modern Liberals are more intelligent than others. Can i ask why?

In UK all the safe conservative seats are full of the rich intelligent people. All the safe labour seats are full of the poor, uneducated and the immigrants.

Incidentally Green Party voters were proven to have the highest iqs. Yet their policies would trash the country in the name the environment and "equality"

I do come across alot of high earning well educated "liberals" but i always find them to be inherently stupid people that can buy their way out of the social problems that they have contributed to thru their Fabian ideals.

Ahhh, again inane comments from someone who knows absolutely NOTHING of history....IF you were aware of history you would know that Cleopatra did not have a drop of Egyptian blood in her veins!!. She was Greek!...She was 11th & last of the line of the Ptolomies. A GREEK dynastic order set about by Alexander the great some three centuries earlier. Ptolomy I was his favorite commander & the dynasty began in the newly established GREEK city of Alexandria!

You DO realise that the racial family line classified as "caucasians" includes far more than just Europeans (i.e. "whites"!) right?!. Caucasians include all semites (Arabs & Jews). All Turkic peoples. Persians, Azeri's, Uzbeks (all of the population of western Asia btw) & much of south Asia. The Arabo-Berbic north Africa also From Morrocco to EGYPT!...Egypt & much of the bloodline of north Africa has been affected by miscegenation from slaves brought up from sub-saharan Africa (mostly by Arab slavers from the 7th-13th centuries ce).

I have neighbors who are Coptic christian Egyptians & they can trace their lineage back to ancient times in Egypt...They are CERTAINLY caucasian! (I did NOT say "white"-European. I said caucasian!)...They look like Sicilians (who ARE European BTW!) the wife has green eyes!.

People like Desiree & her Afro-centrist nut jobs have a huge mental disconnect on this subject. They hear that Egypt is in "Africa" so automatically jump to the conclusion that Egypt was "black". She fails to understand that the classification of continents is a thoroughly arbitrary nomemclature..The term "Africa" as we know it for the entire continent did not come about until the European middle ages from the age of exploration..North Africa was & always had been part of the "Medeterranian world & NEVER as part of the black peoples of sub-saharan "Africa"..In fact in ancient times all the lands south of the sahara where classified as "Ehtiopia" (which literally translated to "burnt skin"!). Africa was the name of a Roman colony that now encompasses most of what is now Tunisia & the coast of Libya...Only in he middle ages did that name began to cover the whole landmass.

"Unfortunately, the general public is largely unaware of how Haley's monumental family autobiography, stretching back to 18th-century Africa, has been discredited.

Indeed, a 1997 BBC documentary expose of Haley's work has been banned by U.S. television networks - especially PBS, which would normally welcome such a program.

Coincidentally, the "Roots" anniversary comes amid the growing scandal over disclosures of historian Stephen Ambrose's multiple incidents of plagiarism. Because as Haley himself was forced to acknowledge, a large section of his book -
including the plot, main character and scores of whole passages - was
lifted from "The African," a 1967 novel by white author Hal Courlander.

But plagiarism is the least of the problems in "Roots." And they would likely have remained largely unknown, had journalist Philip Nobile not undertaken a remarkable study of Haley's private papers shortly before they were auctioned off.

The result was featured in a devastating 1993 cover piece in the Village Voice. It confirmed - from Haley's own notes - earlier claims that the alleged history of the book was a near-total invention."

"Black mentality: Egypt is in Africa. Blacks came from Africa. So Egyptians must be black."

Not necessarily. Carthage was in Africa. Yet, how many blacks are claiming the Carthaginians were black?

Wheareas there is substantial (linguistic, anthropological, etc) evidence for a black Egypt. There is little to no evidence for a black Carthage.

Desiree has a better point than you do. Whites have long portrayed themselves in non-white roles in movies as the entire cast of the movie. Yet you whining whites today complain about a few token blacks in white historical epics?

"Try going to Egypt sometime. Ever wonder why the ancient Egyptians called the people past upper Egypt the nubians or dark people? You left out the part where they also depicted their lighter skinned northern neighbors as different than themselves (i.e. syrians, libyans). Upper Egyptians and Nubians were often indistinguishable.

On your other nonsense about a blacks in general being a "slave class" and "eunochs" I have no comment. There is absolutely no evidence for that. Therefore its a non-issue.

Anonymous said...

"Yet, how many blacks are claiming the Carthaginians were black?"

Keeping in mind that 50% of black males don't finish high school, it's safe to assume that most blacks have never heard of Carthage.

However, ask 100 random black people if the "Pyramids Of Carthage" were built by blacks...all 100 will mindlessly say yes.

@ Don:

If you noticed, I did not include Cleopatra because I don't dispute her not being a real Egyptian (she was white).

The critique was in linking a white Cleopatra portrayal with Ancient Egypt. The viewer will automatically see Liz Taylor and Richard Burton and think that this was how the Egyptians looked, which would be wrong.

This is your thinking (the result of brainwashing from the media) when you see the depictions of ancient Egyptians as modern Arab Egyptians on the History Channel.

I have neighbors who are Coptic christian Egyptians & they can trace their lineage back to ancient times in Egypt...They are CERTAINLY caucasian! (I did NOT say "white"-European. I said caucasian!)...

Wowza, Don.

Here's the thing: I could trace my lineage far back as well and there would be a lot of whites--probably more whites than blacks the 'whole pie' considered--but that does not make me 'white' like most of the people on this site. That these people can trace their families roots back to ancient Egypt (so they claim) does not mean Ancient Egyptians looked like them.

That's 1+1=3 logic, Don.

They look like Sicilians (who ARE European BTW!) the wife has green eyes!.

According to SBPDL in this post,

http://stuffblackpeopledontlike.blogspot.com/2010/01/341-jersey-shore.html

your 'Sicilian look-alikes' are black:

"genetic evidence through DNA sequencing shows that modern-day Italians of Sicilian descent carry an abnormally large amount of African mtDNA and more so, genetic evidence from the Y chromosome- lineage in Sicily confirms the presence of Black ancestry."

This was SBPDL's reasoning as to why the Jersey Shore cast 'acted a fool' (of course, he refuses to acknowledge the fact that the most popular characters on the JS are Chilean, German-Irish, and even of Eastern European-derivation, ie. white).

However, if we go by SBPDL's logic, these Sicilian look-alikes, Don, who are 'Coptic Christian Egyptians', are tracing their lineage back to Ancient BLACK Egypt.

Wowza! Makes perfect sense, babycakes! My point is proven! Even SBPDL agrees with me and he's this super duper, mega-smart white guy! ;-)

Desiree said...

You left out the part where they also depicted their lighter skinned northern neighbors as different than themselves (i.e. syrians, libyans). Upper Egyptians and Nubians were often indistinguishable.

Yes, absolutely correct, Billy Blanks. They definitely remarked on the dissimilarity.

According to Herodotus, the father of History, ancient Egyptians and Ethiopians were described together using 'black descriptors':

At Dodona, however, the priestesses who deliver the oracles have a different version of the story: two black doves, they say, flew away from Thebes in Egypt, and one of them alighted at Dodona, the other in Libya, The story which the people of Dodona tell about the doves came, I should say, from the fact that the women were foreigners, whose language sounded to them like the twittering of birds, As to the bird being black, they merely signify by this that the woman was Egyptian. -book II

But it is undoubtedly a fact that the Colchians are of Egyptian descent, My own idea on the subject was based on the fact that they have black skins and wooly hair, and secondly, and more especially, on the fact that the Colchians, the Egyptians, and the Ethiopians are the only races which from ancient times have practiced circumcision. -book II

I don't like to consider statuaries and art but Ramses' mummy looks facially black (Ethiopian), despite his so-called red hair, which was white hair dyed with the henna plant.

Please note, white people, that there is a strange hold that the Arab government has over it's current country's (Egypt's) antiquities and history. If today's Arab Egyptians are believable as accurate representations of Ancient Egypt (LOL, yes, let's disregard the majority of indigenous Egyptians who look like American blacks), then these so-called 'white people' gang-raped an American journalist--

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/international/cbs_reporter_cairo_nightmare_pXiUVvhwIDdCrbD95ybD5N

while they called her 'Jew!'

Interesting that SBPDL didn't post on this; we all know that since Egyptian Arabs are the same as Ancient Egyptians who are 'european', this was just another rape of a white woman by white men.

Right, SBPDL? Come on, a little honesty is in order, man.

I think so many of you are missing the big picture. In the beginning the great land of Africa in its entirety was populated by Black Africans. In the beginning China was populated with Chinese people, America was populated with Native Americans, Europe was monopolized by causation people, and so on.

My point is, every piece of land was occupied by it's original origin of people until greed and the need to conquer and take over what a particulars group had. Ignorance, evil, destruction, raping the women of the land for self pleasure, killing the men women and children filled the lands with fear and hopelessness.

The group of people that were considered to most ruthless are the Europeans. They march, stomps, kicked and spit on anyone else's way of life because they were so filled with delusions of grander. Very scare, heartless group of people that felt the only people with feeling were there own group. That fact that the Kill, Crush, and Destroy team just stepped on that precious babies scull with their big combat boots on didn't even shed a tear when they walked away from the baby who was left bleeding out on the dirty street still laughing when they clap hands because several of them just raped a women on her own land in front of her children laying there bloody from the rape she just encountered. She had to endure being touched by nasty pink flesh with green veins showing through the pink flesh, not to mention his sweat from his nasty, wet, greasy haired who hasn't bathed in days. But not a bit of remorse was felt over dinner with his family for what he did to another human being and their family.

The reason why there was no remorse is because these sick asses really believed there bullshit. Now why would people that evil allow people they are trying to break down into servants to assist their lazy asses history about their people.

Isn't one of the first steps in bringing a nation to it's knee's is to take away anything that would make the proud people as a whole? Now that they are their how can they allow a celebration of greatness from someone other than themselves. This would mean they would have to acknowledge these people as humans and possible people that are on there same level. Wars broke out all over, different nation took over kingdoms. People left their lands to attack people of other lands. This is the reason we know our African heritage was in Ancient Egyptian times. Not to mention the clear as day artwork. Seriously people!!!

Perhaps since Egypt was know for being the first civilization and had so many discoveries and ideas and religious ideas that flowed over into Ancient Greece and then Rome. Imagine that...All that from African people...Noooooo Way.....

Did I just sum it up or what? Hopefully some of your prejudice and ignorance will have some light shown on your closed mind. I do realize there are hundreds of years of brain washing your people into thinking you all are the only ones that can accomplish great things.

It's okay...keep your ignorant eyes shut because when you do decide to open them up we will be back on top just as we were during the first civilization, Black Ancient African Civilization in Africa. The Jews were the African's slaves. Now take a look at some of the Ancient Egyptian statues and carving on the wall. Look at the features.
