Why is this important?
Well, why not read the 2014 homicide stats for 63.3 percent black Memphis (27.5 percent white) to find out? [Homicides rise 12 percent in Memphis in 2014, Memphis Commercial-Appeal, 1-2-15]:
Jevon Galloway was found shot to death on the sidewalk in Frayser on Dec. 28.
Police said the 20-year-old man was involved in an argument with an individual who may have been driving a gold Cadillac.
Galloway’s death was the last homicide of 2014, police said.
Last year, there was a homicide nearly every other day, marking a double-digit increase over the previous year.
Of the 168 homicides in the Bluff City, 144 were determined to be criminal homicides while 24 were ruled justifiable. In 2013, the city recorded 150 homicides: 129 criminal and 21 justifiable.
The 2014 numbers show an increase of 12 percent in total homicides and a 11.6 percent in criminal homicides.
“We average around 150 homicides a year and this year is an increase, but you can say that of that increase 86 of these homicides were committed by individuals that knew each other,” said Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong. “And 52 of the homicides we had started with an argument that escalated into a physical altercation that ended in a homicide. That tells us that people have to have better de-escalating tactics to be able to just walk away from a situation.”
While Memphis homicides increased other cities saw their murder rate decline.
Nashville hit a historic low for the second year in a row, according to Metro police.
In 2014, there were 41 criminal homicides, down 2 from 2013 and 4 fewer than the previous low in 1963 — the year the Metro Nashville government was created.
While the homicide rate increased in Memphis, Armstrong said initiatives like the Memphis Gun Down program, which focuses on teens who are committing gun violence, have played a part in preventing even more violence.
“Even though we had 168 homicides, it scares me to think of how many we would have had without this type of unit out there working,” Armstrong said.
Suburban police departments in Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown and Millington reported no homicides in 2014. Lakeland and Arlington, which are patrolled by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, also did not have any homicides. There's a reason the black controlled Memphis city council asked the cameras of The First 48 to stop filming the type of climate blacks create in the city, forever ceasing the broadcasting for the world to see why whites fled the city to call Bartlett, Collierville and Germantown home.
No blacks, know peace: a simple concept, made even more obvious with the existence of Memphis.
For Memphis is a reminder of what Africans in America create.
